Iminathi Educare & Thokozani Together Centre construction nears completion

By Sharon Richey | 2017-09-12

For several years, Because has been working with Uthando, a non-profit and Fair Trade in Tourism accredited organization, to help raise funds for life changing community development projects in South Africa.

The latest project we are supporting is the construction of the Iminathi Educare / Thokozani Together Centre in Cape Town, and we’re proud to announce the Youth Centre is due to be completed this September.smalls4.jpg

The project will offer clean and modern community facilities and services to almost 500 locals and the centre will offer a range of facilities to help support local children, youth and families.

The centre will provide an extensive list of services and facilities including:

  • Almost 100 young children being taught by four full time teachers who are pursuing further studies in Early Childhood Development
  • Parents being able to drop their children at the Educare centre for an entire day of learning based activities. Children will also receive nutritious meals
  • A homework club will offer students help with their school work and a parent / teacher night will take place every three months, thanks to local volunteers
  • A Libromat will offer parents affordable laundry services, parental education, and access to a children's library - transforming the chore of hand-washing clothes into the pleasure of reading with their child
  • Aspiring singers can join the Thokozani Youth Choir (that made it to the semi-finals of South Africa's Got Talent!) or take part in an adventure camp that will also offer students tutoring sessions before their exams
  • Thokozani Together will also be a local community hall that's used regular for community meetings
  • A jungle gym and play area will provide a safe, secure and fun space for children to play in the afternoon. Computers and a library on site will also be open to all local residents
  • The centre will hold a monthly market selling both new and used clothes
  • And lastly, in an effort to foster youth employment, Thokozani Together will help young entrepreneurs in the community create their own business.

Below is a sketch of what the centre will look like upon completion:
