A roundup of our creative team's favourite inspiring, crazy and super fresh finds this month. Enjoy!
We do a LOT of research when we're working on a brief for one of our amazing clients. Needless to say, we come across some very inspiring, crazy and super cool stuff. There are some incredibly talented people out there!
These folks inspire us to do the work we do, and we thought they might inspire you too. So, our very own team of creative gurus have committed to sharing a few of their favourite finds once a month to help keep those creative juices flowing.
Today’s Fresh Friday’s selection is brought to you by Kate Royce, our Global Brand Director, who has chosen to give us a taste of what’s hot and happening in Cape Town, South Africa. Enjoy!
My brother introduced me to ‘The Ultimate Dog Walker’ (yes, that’s what he’s really known as). He’d recount stories of this uber cool, dog-crazy adventurer who would arrive with a car-full of canines to pick up his two French Bulldogs and take them on these epic outings. I was like, ‘how cool can a dog walker actually be...?’. And then I checked his IG feed. And then I wanted to be him. Seriously, Cape Town’s Craig Mitchell, owner of Poochy Coo, has successfully managed to turn adventuring with man’s best friend into a proper business, and has garnered some insta fame in the process (just try resist giving him a follow...). Craig basically gets paid to spend all day, every day missioning in the mountains, swimming in dams, rolling down grass hills, or playing on the beach with a pack of best friends. Talk about turning your passion into your career.
I’m in love with Wiid Design’s cork creations (particularly their Terrazzo & Cork Furniture Collection if anyone wants to buy me an early birthday present). Before seeing Laurie Wiid van Heerden’s work, the only cork I had come into contact with was that coming out of my wine bottles, so I immediately found his pieces captivating. Wiid combines this unconventional material with time-honoured craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology to create a variety of products, from furniture and lighting, to tableware and collectible objects. Cork doesn’t get a lot of love in the design world, so working with the underutilized material has allowed him to achieve a number of world ‘firsts’, including the world’s largest cork pendant light and cork cabinet. Not only are his collections truly unique, but they’re also eco-efficient and promote sustainable development #winwinANDwin. Man, the texture of cork is just so satisfying, isn’t it...?
David Scott - aka the Kiffness*, is awesome for so many reasons. He’s a South African musician, producer and parody artist who has kept us ‘SAFFAS’ thoroughly entertained throughout lockdown with brilliant live-looping internet collabs (amongst other things). But it’s one in particular that got the internet's attention - Alugalug Cat, what the musician has said is his “most ambitious internet collab to date”. Since its release, the mashup’s had over 30 million views on Facebook, over 8 million on TikTok and almost 2 million on Youtube. It's been so loved, that The Kiffness even released a full version of the song which, in itself, has been a massive hit. The cat collab is absurd. It’s mesmerizing. It’s just that weird kind of unanticipated cool that makes the internet go moggy. And I could watch it over and over and over again...
BONUS: Also check out ‘One Pound Fish Man’. You’re welcome.
*Kiff is a South African colloquial term for cool or awesome, so The Kiffness = The Coolness.
#momofboys, aspiring entrepreneur, lover of change, disliker of wastefulness. My dad once described me as “having the ability to find beauty in the strangest places”, which is one of the nicest things anyone’s ever said to me.
